Steve King: Roberts would make an outstanding governor

U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron, is officially neutral as his party enters its final weeks of vetting three candidates for a chance to challenge Democratic Gov. Chet Culver in November.
That said, King, who connects with the GOP base as well as any politician in Iowa, does have a sense of the gubernatorial primary race and what it would take for State Rep. Rod Roberts, R-Carroll, to emerge from a decidedly underdog position.
“I’ve actually thought that through a little bit,” King said in Carroll in response to a question from the Daily Times Herald. “Of course I like Rod a lot. I’ve served with him when we were in the General Assembly together.”
Roberts, a five-term state representative, joins better-known Republicans, former Gov. Terry Branstad and Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats, in the primary.
King — while not endorsing a candidate at this point — said Roberts has the qualifications and skills to be governor as well as the political network to be competitive as the contest races toward the June primary.
“He (Roberts) would make an outstanding governor, there’s no question about it,” King said. “The question is does he have the juice to overcome the fund-raising and the network that is out there?”
The western Iowa congressman said Roberts’ path to the nomination is predicated on how strong Vander Plaats, a northwest Iowa conservative who has sought the keys to Terrace Hill for the last decade, remains in the race.
Do Iowa Republicans see the primary as a match-up with Branstad as the establishment candidate and Vander Plaats as the more conservative alternative? Or does Roberts edge Vander Plaats out of that role?
“That question could change if Bob Vander Plaats’ support diminished,” King said.
King said Roberts’ strategy should be to position himself in a head-to-head with Branstad, a dynamic from which the Carroll Republican could emerge.
Roberts has been running a shoe-leather campaign for the last year, hitting GOP events all over the state. Both he and Vander Plaats were pressing the flesh a few weeks ago at a major King fund-raiser in the Sioux City area — one at which Branstad was noticeably absent.
King said Roberts, an evangelical pastor who has served as statewide development director for the Christian churches/Churches of Christ, has been doing the political grassroots organizing necessary for a fighting chance.
“I’ve been impressed with what he has put together across the state, the network, especially the faith community, that has been consistently behind him,” King said.
